It was established in 1558.
Now it is now the oldest operating stock market in Europe.
In addition to its stronghold as a maritime capital, Hamburg is also one of the world’s top three locations for aviation.
A scenic city surrounded by water, Hamburg has more bridges than any other city in the world.
More canals than Amsterdam and Venice combined.
Shopping in Hamburg: Neuer Wall
My favorite shopping area is called “Neuer Wall” and it was just a few minutes walking from my hotel.
Actually, I found it by accident.
My reason for visiting Hamburg was to attend a media conference.
Our and our “assignment” was to take photographs that told a story about the city of Hamburg.
I loved taking pictures of all the scenic waterscapes taken with an iPhone.
Yet as a fashionista I was charmed by the high-end brand-name shops!
You can imagine how these glitzy, sparkling designer shops of the Neuer Wall cheered me up and made me feel immediately at home!
What You Will Find at the Neuer Wall
The Neuer Wall does look a lot like Rodeo Drive … if Rodeo Drive was on the water!
This is an outdoor shopping street.
You will find almost all your favorite designer brands here: Escada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Jil Sander, Akris, Zegna, and more.
Address (for taxi) Neuer Wall, 20354 Hamburg
Where to Have Lunch at the Neuer Wall
Restaurant Atelier F describes itself as a modern/French kitchen. It was recommended by my hotel.
Before venturing there, I read about 100 reviews on web sites like Trip Advisor.
I must say, the reviews were fairly mixed so I decided against going there in favor of my hotel restaurant.
Yet when I was walking along the Neuer Wall the next day, I passed by it.
I looked at the menu and at the people eating inside.
The food looked pretty good, and the people all seemed to be having a good time.
So even though it was 4pm and past the “normal” lunch hour, I popped in and was lucky to snag a prime corner table.
The Atelief F restaurant is divided into two parts.
One part is more casual, with high “bar style” tables.
The other room is more intimate, with comfortable looking tables and chairs.
Both areas serve the same menu.
I found the prices very reasonable and the food delicious!
And my seat could not be beat – I had a view of the water, the shoppers passing by, and Zegna!
For lunch, I ordered a salmon filet, that also came with salad and a side dish of my choice.
And though it was four o’clock a lot of other people were having a late lunch as well.
Exhausted after shopping, no doubt!
Importance of Booking a Table at Atelier F
I liked my lunch so much I decided to pop in the next day, Saturday, at 1pm.
To my surprise, the restaurant was absolutely packed, and there was a very long waiting list. I was told to come back in a few hours.
When I did come back at 5pm, I had to promise to leave my table by 7pm as the restaurant was entirely booked for dinner!
I really enjoyed the food and “vibe” at this restaurant.
The food was great, reasonably priced, and the people-watching was a lot of fun. Everyone seemed to be young and energetic.
As much as I liked the restaurant, it’s more a casual bistro than anything else so do not expect too much luxury.
