Adanti Winery

Adanti Winery is a historic wine cellar located in the Montefalco area of Umbria, It was purchased in 1974 when Domenico and Pietro Adanti saw the property and decided to sell their furniture business and go into wine production.

In many ways, their venture was a “sure thing” given that the land was located in the hill of Arquata, Colcimino and Torre del Colle, famous since ancient times for the quality and finesse of their wines and olive oils.

The brothers began immediately to replant the vines. They also modernized the old convent of the Friars Celestine, which had been built on the ruins of the Roman period. This would serve as their winery.

Sagrantino

Adanti was one of the first Sagrantino growers to produce a more elegant, dry style of the Sagrantino grape.

Prior to this time, Sagrantino had been vinified in a tanic yet sweet style to be consumed during the Easter period and holidays.

The brothers noticed this  trend to drier wines and with a smoother, less tannic profile and hired a winemaker to produce a dry, well-structured Sagrantino.

The result won them fame, awards, and set their winery on the list of Montefalco’s best Sagrantino’s producers.

Organic Farming Principles

Beyond the vines, the Adanti’s adherence to organic farming principles is a testament to their commitment to sustainability, fostering biodiversity, and preserving the health of the land for future generations.

In the Winery

The Adanti Winery’s commitment to quality extends to the careful hand-harvesting of grapes, meticulous selection process, and the judicious use of oak in aging.

The Adanti winery has embraced modern winemaking techniques with a nod to tradition. The higher-echelon wines in particular showcase Montefalco’s rich terroir and the family’s passion for winemaking.

In the Tasting Room

The Adanti Tasting room is large and almost bustling with guests, despite that the winery is not located in a very populated area. Tourists come to seek it, one of the tasting room staffers told me. Many visitors have found about the winery through social media or even members of their family, who had visited over the years.

In some ways, the tasting room resembles the “Napa Valley” style in which each table has its designated winery representative, who pours samples of the wine and tells them stories about the winery and its owners.

Community

Adanti’s commitment to preserving the essence of Umbria extends beyond their own vineyards. The family has been instrumental in promoting the region, actively participating in local events and initiatives that spotlight Montefalco’s unique wine culture.

In recent years, the Adanti family has started experimenting with amphora aging – a nod to the ancient winemaking traditions of the region. This innovative approach is evident in a select range of their wines, adding a new dimension to their portfolio and further highlighting their commitment to harmonizing tradition and innovation.
