Anteprima L’Altra Toscana

L’Altra Toscana

Tuscan wine is famous for its Sangiovese-based grape.Anteprima L’Altra Toscana We have Chianti Classico, now celebrating its 100th Anniversary. And also Morellino and the other zones of Chianti.

Yet what of the other regions “L’Altra Toscana?”

The 2024 Anteprime Toscana celebrates Sangiovese from all regions of Tuscany. This tasting on the last day of the week-long event pays tribute to the “hidden gems” on any wine list.

The regions that savvy wine consumers, who covet the great price to value wines, always secretly covet on a wine list.

Journalists sat at table serviced by sommeliers, choosing flights from the various regions listed in the tasting book.

L'Altra Toscana Adventure

The adventure was in the comparison of the wines.

Would one choose wines from a single region, judged together by year?

Or would one judge wines, in a way that juxtaposed wines together?

Beauty Contest?

This nicely orchestrated tasting allowed journalists to experience what may be called ‘the true heart’ of Tuscan Sangiovese.

It was a moment of freedom. With so many secret gems just a few meters away, this 2024 L’Altra Toscana wine tasting is memorable. It can be highlighted as one of the few times in history  a wine scholar can  conduct a thoughtful comparison to a neighboring region.

This said, Tuscany boasts so many climates and topography differences a true comparison is not possible.

Yet a savvy taster will find “markers” among the different regions.

The Medici Family

Though I had associated the Medici family with Carmignano, during this tasting I discovered the Medici family had influenced many of the top regions in “L’Altra Toscana.”

Conclusion

Having tasted so many wines from “L’Altra Toscana” I will say that sommeliers, wine buyers, and restauranteurs can look to this region for a great selection of top-quality wines outside what may be known as the “usual suspects” in Tuscany.

While it’s possible a seated restaurant guest may not know a given geographical region, a savvy sommelier will be able to explain the wine and highlight the quality.
