A Canine Guide Amid Coal-Brown Vines
We were warmly received by the the owner along with an unexpected tour guide: the Setaro family’s small brown dog—believed to be a mix of French Bulldog and Pitbull.
With a shiny coat, lively eyes, and boundless affection, the dog darted ahead, guiding us through rows of indigenous vines like a true vineyard mascot.
The Estate
This estate brings together centuries of viticultural tradition, a deep respect for the land, and modern artisanal winemaking.
Casa Setaro officially came into being in 2004, when Massimo Setaro inherited ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vineyards from his father Vincenzo.
Today the family cultivates approximately 12 hectares of vineyards at altitudes between 200 and 350 meters above sea level.
The soils are a rich mosaic of lapilli, effusive volcanic rocks, and sand—packed with minerals like potassium, phosphorus, and iron. This gives a vivid mineral imprint to the grapes.
This terrain nurtures unique native vines and its poor soil also challenges them.
Yet Casa Setaro embraces this, eschewing herbicides and chemical fertilizers in favor of organic, sustainably minded practices.
The winery champions grape varieties deeply rooted in Vesuvian heritage, including the near-extinct white variety Caprettone—which the family has been instrumental in rescuing and vindicating—as well as Falanghina, Aglianico, and Piedirosso.
From Vine to Wine: Tradition Meets Innovation
In the atmospheric cellar—carved into volcanic rock beneath the family home—Casa Setaro marries tradition with modernity.
Stainless-steel tanks and French oak barrels coexist, facilitating spontaneous fermentations paired with low-intervention methods that prioritize sheer terroir expression. Thee family’s commitment to place-driven wines extends to aging strategies that avoid ideology, instead emphasizing clarity, balance, and authenticity
