Mevante wineery.
It was such a delight to meet the Mevante brother and sister team of Paolo and Antonella Presciutti during a dinner celebrating their success, their excellent wine, and their unique story.
The Mevante Sibling Story
I met Paolo and Antonella as part of Anteprima Sagrantino, which celebrates the release of the new Sagrantino vintage.
The siblings are the owners of Mevante. Its vineyards have been in the Bevagna hills since the nineties, in the heart of the Sagrantino di Montefalco production area.
Antonella and Paolo are not twins.
They do not look very much alike. Yet when speaking to them, their ideology and dream were so similar they may well have been.
The Childhood Dream
The siblings grew up with a dream of starting their own winery one day. Though their parents were not in the wine industry, they had a successful enterprise. As a result, the family traveled widely, often visiting wineries around the world.
Listening to Antonella tell me this story served as a fascinating treat. As they grew into adults, the siblings kept their dream of creating a winery producing wine from indigenous Umbrian grape varieties, including Sagrantino, Grechetto, and Trebbiano.

The Dream Becomes Reality
The siblings found and purchased an existing vineyard located in the ancient Roman city of Mevania, for which the winery is named.
Paolo attended winemaking school, and developed a relationship with the professor, a well-known consultant to top wineries. This professor was engaged as Mevante’s consultant, offering advice in the vineyard and then, when the grapes were ready, on winemaking.
The Tasting
The Tasting
During the tasting of current vintage wines and vintage Sagrantino, I found all the wine exceptionally well made–a combination of the superior terroir and the winemaking.
During my visit, what I found most valuable was the siblings’ enthusiasm for their product and their pure joy is sharing their wine with visitors.
Open to the Public by Reservation
The winery offers tastings and tours by reservation Monday through Saturday. You can choose tours of the vineyard and a tasting of wines in the cellar, accompanied by local cheeses and salami.
