Tenuta Bellafonte
Tenuta Bellafonte, resting in the serene countryside of Montefalco, stands as testament to the enduring love of viticulture that permeates the Italian spirit.
The winery stands as a beacon of excellence, embodying the charm and sophistication of Umbrian wine.
The history of Tenuta Bellafonte is as rich and inviting as the wines it produces.
Founded in 2008 by Peter Heilbron, the winery was borne out of Heilbron’s lifelong passion for wine.
Peter Heilbron had been the managing director of Heineken’s Italian subsidiary, mass-producing and distributing beer and related brands.
Then he decided to live his lifelong dream of starting his own boutique wine estate in Montefalco.
The name Bellafonte, derived from the Italian ‘beautiful fountain.’, It refers to the natural springs that dot the winery’s 30 hectares of land. The winery’s philosophy reflects Heilbron’s respect for nature and dedication to sustainable winemaking practices.
Organic Farming
The vineyards are organically farmed, embodying Heilbron’s belief that the best wines are born from a healthy, harmonious ecosystem.
The winery’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond the vineyards, with a gravity-flow winery reducing the need for mechanical intervention and the usage of natural materials such as terracotta and wood in the winemaking process.
The Sagrantino Secret
However, it is the Sagrantino wine that truly sets Tenuta Bellafonte apart. Sagrantino is indigenous to the region, a grape variety that takes its name from the Latin ‘sacer’, meaning sacred. It was traditionally used to make sweet, passito-style wines, but in recent decades, winemakers have harnessed its potential to create formidable dry reds.
Sagrantino di Montefalco, the winery’s flagship wine, is a profound expression of this unique grape. It encapsulates the essence of the Umbrian terroir, with its full-bodied structure, striking tannins, and complex aromas of dark fruits, spices, and hints of earthiness.
The production of Sagrantino at Tenuta Bellafonte is a labor of love.
The grapes are hand-harvested and meticulously sorted, ensuring only the finest make it into the final blend. The wine is then aged for at least 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, adding depth and complexity.
This process results in a wine that is a true reflection of the land, the grape, and the winemaker’s vision.
The journey of Tenuta Bellafonte, from Heilbron’s first encounter with Sagrantino to the winery’s present-day recognition, is a story of passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence. It is a testament to the transformative power of wine, capable of altering life’s course, uniting people, and capturing the essence of a place in a bottle.
At its core, Tenuta Bellafonte is more than just a winery. It’s a reflection of a man’s passion and respect for the land, the community, and the art of winemaking. It embodies the spirit of Italy in every sense, encapsulating the beauty, history, and charm of Montefalco.
