Tasting Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

The origins of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano can be traced back to the 14th century when the wine was first produced by the local aristocracy. At that time, the wine was known as “Vino Rosso di Montepulciano” and was considered a luxury item, reserved only for the wealthy elite.

However, by the 17th century, the wine had become more widely available, and its reputation had grown, leading to its designation as a “noble” wine.

The modern history of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano begins in the mid-20th century when a group of local wine producers formed a consortium to promote and protect the wine’s quality and reputation.

The consortium was instrumental in establishing the wine’s DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status in 1966, which was later upgraded to DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) status in 1980.

Today, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is made from at least 70% Sangiovese grapes, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile. The remaining 30% can be made up of other approved varieties, such as Canaiolo Nero or Mammolo. The wine is aged for a minimum of two years, with at least one year spent in oak barrels, which gives it its distinctive complex aroma and flavor profile.

Fortress

In terms of style, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is typically medium-bodied, with flavors of cherry, plum, and violet, along with hints of spice and earthiness.

The wine’s acidity is moderate, and its tannins are firm but not overpowering, making it a versatile wine that pairs well with a variety of foods.

In recent years, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has faced increased competition from other Tuscan wines, such as Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico. However, its rich history, distinct style, and exceptional quality have helped it to maintain its position as one of Italy’s most prestigious wines.
