Bacardi Rum Experience in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico, the enchanting Caribbean island known for its vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and rich history, also has a claim to fame that makes it an enticing destination for rum enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.
In the heart of San Juan, the capital city, lies the historic Bacardi distillery, a place where the spirit of Puerto Rico is distilled into the world-renowned Bacardi rum.
A Brief History of Bacardi Rum
Before delving into the captivating tours at the Bacardi distillery, it’s essential to understand the history behind this iconic brand. Bacardi, founded in 1862 by Don Facundo Bacardi Massó, has a storied legacy that traces back to the charming city of Santiago de Cuba.
Don Facundo, an innovator and visionary, revolutionized the world of rum by introducing techniques like charcoal filtration and aging in oak barrels, which led to the creation of the first ever “white” or clear rum. This innovation was the birth of the Bacardi rum we know and love today.
Puerto Rico has played a pivotal role in the production and global distribution of Bacardi rum, and the brand has become synonymous with the island’s identity.
The Bacardi Distillery Tour Experience
Visiting the Bacardi distillery is a fun, unforgettable experience that offers an immersive journey into the world of rum production, Bacardi’s history, and the vibrant Puerto Rican culture.
The distillery offers a range of tours that cater to different interests and preferences, making it an ideal destination for both rum connoisseurs and casual tourists.
Though guests can choose from different tours and different price points, I enjoyed a tour that combined both the history, a tour of the facilities, and a cocktail making masterclass.
The adventure began with a “train ride” (more of a tram) that took us from the tasting area to the building where the tours and tastings were held.
While we waited for the tram, we were able to use tokens (included with purchased) to choose one of the many cocktails on offer.
Our guide was dynamic, personable, and really brought home the history of Bacardi home to us guests.
Once in the Masterclass, each cocktail student had a beautifully set desk/counter space complete with everything needed to make three different cocktails.
The best part?
Making the cocktails was exciting, drinking the fruit of our labor even better.
