Gambero Rosso Lombardy Wine Tasting
Today Gambero Rosso International came to New York City for their spectacular annual Tre Bicchieri Italian wine tasting.
This is the best opportunity to taste the world’s finest Italian wines annually. Organized by Gambero Rosso (think the Italian version of Food and Wine magazine). The name Tre Bicchieri comes from the word “glass” as the, reviewed wines receive uno, due, or tre bicchieri (one, two, or three glasses) as a scoring system.
Aside from tasting the wonderful wines to be tasted, I attended the Taste of Lombardy Masterclass. This was a selection of ten amazing wines from the Lombardy region of Italy near Lake Garda.
The Masterclass & Wines
Lombardy is a wine-growing and agricultural region around the large city of Milan. The five white wines and five red wines showcased at the Masterclass were spectacular examples of what this fine region can offer.

The White Lombardy Wines
Oltrepo Pavese DOCG Methodo Classico Pinot Nero Pas Dose “Riva Rinetti: 2018 Calatroni
The first wine was a sparkling wine from Pinot Noir – Very elegant Lombardy sparkler with rich, creamy texture and racy acidity.
Comes from a single vineyard the Calatroni single vineyard characterized by chalky soil. It was quite fresh, with notes of lemon, a creamy texture and mousse, and sharply defined flavors.
Consorzio Tutela Lugano DOC Lugano Superiore DOC “Madonna della Scaperta 2022 Perla Del Garda.
A clean, fragrant white wine from the Trebbiano grape characterized by a clean lemony aroma and racy acidity.
Consorzio Tutela vino Oltrepo Pavese Oltrepo Pavese DOC Riesling Riserva “Campo della Fajada” 2019
This delicious Riesling comes from a single vineyard. A creamy and elegant example of the best Riesling can offer with a grapefruit nose.
Consorzio Valtensi – Valtenesi RGC DOC “Antitesi” 2022 Avanzi –
This aromatic wine comes from a region close to the shores of Lake Garda. Aromas and flavors of pink grapefruit and pink peppercorns. Fresh clean flavor and vibrant acidity with a bare hint of pink in this otherwise pale wine.
Consorzio Valtenesi – Valtenesi RGC DOC “Molmenti” 2019 Costaripa
This rose-colored wine is darker and deeper in color than the previous wine, with more pronounced flavors and a creamier texture.

Consorzio Tutela Vinci Oltrepo Paves – Provincia di Pavia IGT Pinot Nero ‘Terrazze Alte” 2021 Tenuta Mazzolino
The garnet color of this Pinot Noir is translucent, with the wine having a perfumed nose of herbs and red/black fruit
Consorzio Tutela Vini Oltrepo Pavese DOC “V18” 2020 – CorderoSan Giorgio
This Pinot Noir also offers a perfumed nose, with a darker fruit and flower profile such as black currant and blackberry.
Consorzio Tutela Vini Oltrepo Pavese Pinot Nero Dell’ Oltrepo Pavese doc “Tavernetto” 2020 Conte Vistarino
This Pinot Noir offers aromas of maraschino cherries, black licorice and a rich vein of ripe red berry fruit laced with vibrant acidity. Well balanced with long length. Very complex
Consorzio tutela Vini Oltrepo Pavese – Buttafuoco dell’ Oltrepo’ Pavese DOC Storico “Vigna Solenga” 2019 Giulio Fiamberti
A full-bodied red from the village of Storico with three layers of different soils including sand .
Consorzio tutela Vini Valtellina – Valtellina Superiore DOCG Sassella Riserva “Clos Convento San Lorenzo” 2018 Mamet Prevostini
100% Nebbiolo grape with very different expression from Barolo. This wine is very complex wine with Perfume of fragrant black tea, garden herbs, intense cherry core, black licorice, dark cherries, spice, violet and roses rich rounded tannins. Notes of dark bitter chocolate
Summary
This was a great Masterclass thta introduced the wines of Lombardy to buyers and other trade individuals attending the Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri event.
