Title: Perticaia Winery: A Testament to Montefalco’s Rich Wine Heritage

Introduction

Nestled in the heart of Montefalco, a picturesque medieval town in the Umbria region of Italy, Perticaia Winery stands as a beacon of tradition and innovation.

Over the years, this renowned winery has carved a niche for itself in the world of fine wines, with a particular emphasis on the production of its exquisite Sagrantino.

In this article, we will delve into the rich history of Perticaia Winery, the diverse array of wines it offers, and the intricate art of crafting their flagship Sagrantino.

History

Winery was founded in 2000 by Guido Guardigli, an entrepreneur with a deep passion for viticulture and the winemaking traditions of Montefalco.

The name “Perticaia” hails from the Umbrian dialect and means “plow,” symbolizing the deep connection between the winery and its land. Perticaia’s vineyards, spanning over 16 hectares, are located in the rolling hills of Montefalco at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level.

This unique location, coupled with a strong commitment to sustainable and organic farming practices, has shaped Perticaia’s philosophy and approach to winemaking.

Anteprima Sagrantino

It was a pleasure to personally tour the winery as a guest of the consortium for the week celebrating Sagrantino – Anteprima Sagrantino.

I was welcomed at the winery with a glass of their sparkling Sagrantino rose-colored sparkling wine, as well as delicious cheese, olive oil, and bread.

For the next hour, Ricardo the winemaker showed me the vineyards and led a tasting in the winery tasting room.

Perticaia Wines on Offer

Sagrantino

The Perticaia winery offers a diverse range of wines, showcasing the best of the region’s

grape varieties and the winery’s innovative techniques.

The lineup includes:

1.     Montefalco Sagrantino: The flagship wine of Perticaia, this 100% Sagrantino wine is a testament to the winery’s dedication to preserving and enhancing the indigenous grape variety. Known for its powerful tannins, complex flavors, and excellent aging potential, Montefalco Sagrantino is the epitome of Umbrian viticulture.

2.     Montefalco Rosso: A classic blend of Sangiovese, Sagrantino, and Merlot, this wine represents the perfect harmony between tradition and innovation. With a balanced mix of fruit and spice flavors, Montefalco Rosso is a versatile wine that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with various dishes.

3.     Montefalco Rosso Riserva: A more complex and refined version of the Montefalco Rosso, the Riserva undergoes an extended aging process in oak barrels, resulting in a wine with a richer structure and more pronounced flavors.

4.     Grechetto: This white wine is made from the Grechetto grape, a variety native to Umbria. With fresh, fruity flavors and a hint of minerality, Grechetto is an excellent choice for those who appreciate a crisp and refreshing white wine.

5.     Trebbiano Spoletino: Another white wine offering, Trebbiano Spoletino is crafted from an indigenous grape variety that thrives in the Montefalco region. With its floral aroma and bright acidity, this wine is perfect as an aperitif or paired with seafood dishes.

Sagrantino Production: A Testament to Dedication and Expertise

At the heart of the Perticaia Winery lies a true devotion to the Sagrantino grape, a native Umbrian variety that has become synonymous with the Montefalco region.

The winery’s success in producing exceptional Sagrantino wines is the result of a meticulous and labor-intensive process, as well as a deep understanding of the terroir and the grape’s unique characteristics.
