Podere Casanova in Montepulciano
Podere Casanova, a high-profile winery in the Montepulciano region of Italy, represents a unique blend of traditional winemaking and modern entrepreneurial spirit. I enjoyed a delightful visit to this state-of-the-art winery, created by the vision of the owners by Isidoro and Susanna Ponzin recently and am excited to tell you all about it.
Winemaking Approach at Podere Casanova
The winemaking approach combines respect for traditional methods with an openness to modern techniques. This blend of old and new is evident in every aspect of production, from the careful selection of grapes to the state-of-the-art equipment used in the cellar.
The vineyards of Podere Casanova are managed with an emphasis on sustainability. The team employs practices that ensure the long-term health of the vines, while also being mindful of the environment. This includes water conservation methods and the use of organic practices where possible.
In the cellar, the winemaking process is carefully monitored. The fermentation and aging processes are tailored to each varietal, ensuring that the unique characteristics of each grape are fully expressed in the final product. The use of oak barrels for aging some of their wines adds complexity and depth, a testament to the winery’s commitment to producing high-quality wines.
The Wines and Philosophy
Podere Casanova’s wine portfolio showcases the diversity of the Montepulciano appellation. Their Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, made primarily from the Sangiovese grape, stands out for its balance and depth. The winery also produces other varietals, each reflecting the terroir of the region.
The owner’s philosophy is to create wines that speak of their origin – wines that encapsulate the character of Montepulciano’s climate, soil, and tradition. This philosophy extends to every bottle produced, aiming to offer wine lovers a true taste of this renowned Italian wine region.
winemaking tradition. Podere Casanova stands as a testament to the successful fusion of past and present, tradition and innovation, in the world of Italian wines.
The Vintage Tasting
At the end of the visit I enjoyed a vintage tasting of their Vina Nobile di Montepulciano, years 2015- 2020, along with four of their iconic wines.
Most wineries might serve bread or crackers as an accompaniment to a wine tasting. But at Podere Casanova a live musician was “paired” with the wines. This represents the owners’ focus on wine and culture.
It was a great visit, warm hospitality, and memorable wines
