Argentina Wine Event
Argentina-based journalist JOAQUIN HILDAGO took wine writers in Manhattan on a detailed tour of the Argentina wine regions today.
Enthusiastic and well-versed in the world of wine, Joaquin was a one-man show as he loaded up the Google Earth maps and showed us detailed images of the specific terroir.

As a special bonus, Joaquin even called on several winemakers during his Masterclass.
This mixed use of technology, video, live tasting of the wine, and Joaquin’s knowledge of winemakers and micro-specific terroir was most admiral.

Takeaway Points
1. “Malbec needs a last name”
Joaquin coined this phrase to mean that Malbec is defined by the specific terroir from which it grows.
In his presentation, she showed many different expressions of Malbec depending on its altitude, proximity to the mountains, proximity to water, and also the many soils where it grows best.
2. New Winemakers, New Ideas
In his presentation, I interpreted Joaquin as feeling that the goals of Malbec producers twenty years ago are not very relevant.
He mentioned that the goal at the time was to give the consumer what the market wanted – but now the Argentine wine industry wants to showcase their delicious variety of their terroir.
Towards that end, he chose many different Malbec based wines that expressed the terroir.
3. Personal observations
The chosen wines had great expression of place. A few I judged to be “iconic” but all were delicious.
Thank you so much Wines of Argentina for this excellent presentation.
