Abruzzo Wines in NYC
Fabulous, tutored tasting and trade tasting to of the Abruzzo region in Italy, involving the efforts of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Abruzzo, Vinous Founder Antonio Galloni, the brand new Fifth Avenue Hotel, and IEEM.
The gorgeous new Fifth Avenue Hotel on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 28th Street offered classic elegance with a friendly staff.
Antonio Galloni is known for his smooth style, and in the presentation’s course deftly introduced the wines in the tasting and also gave insight into the region.
Some of his observations during the ninety-minute presentation included:
– that the producers of Abruzzo, like other regions in Europe, are relatively new to estate bottling;
– that he wanted tasters to experience the entire range Abruzzo has to offer, so after selecting and tasting the wines, he chose one that is not a DOC;
– use of French oak is limited in Abruzzo given the investment;
– small family wineries and cooperatives remain the leading structure for Abruzzo wineries;
– more than 40% of Abruzzo wines are organic or biodynamic.
– entry level wines showed the most improvement in the region;
– in the future, the broad designations of Abruzzo will become more defined;
