St Augustine and Jacksonville

Flying into Florida in January, I expect beaches and mild air. This trip is different.

I am here with the Society of American Travel Writers on a familiarization tour of St. Augustine and Jacksonville.

The base is the Holiday Inn Express St. Augustine – Vilano Beach. It turns out to be an easy and comfortable home for exploring both cities.

The first stop is not the hotel. I go straight from the airport to the Pirate Museum in St. Augustine, carry‑on bag still with me.

I have always liked pirate movies, but do not expect much beyond fun displays.

Instead, I walk into serious history. The museum is full of artifacts and detailed replicas from this coast, and the pirate story here is deep and specific to St. Augustine.

Our guide is dressed as a pirate and also speaks in character. This could feel corny, but he knows the material so well that it works.

He talks about attacks, shipwrecks, and real figures behind the legends. At one point he jokes that local children in fourth grade know pirates almost as well as he does, since school groups come here so often.

The comment is funny, and it also shows how important pirate history is in this city. St. Augustine does not just decorate with a theme. It owns the story.

Right outside, the Colonial Quarter adds another layer. There is a band playing and food available. We are hosted, but regular visitors can buy dishes and drinks and enjoy the music. I follow the group into a blacksmith shop run by an actor in period clothing.

He explains how a real shop would have worked. There is an actual fire, hot and active, as he heats metal and shows how it is shaped. It looks dangerous in a very real way and gives a good sense of how hard daily life used to be.

It is one thing to read about trades in a textbook. It is another to stand a few feet away from a working forge.

Later, I finally check into the hotel. The Holiday Inn Express at Vilano Beach is a pleasant surprise. My room is large, with two oversized beds that take up generous space without feeling cramped.

There is a proper desk where I can sit with a laptop and notes. The bathroom is modern and spotless, with a long counter that easily holds toiletries, notebooks, and other travel clutter.

It is the kind of room that makes it easy to work and then actually rest, not just crash between stops.

The beach is a short walk away. I do not have time to settle into a full beach routine, but it is reassuring to know that the ocean is always right there. The hotel also keeps simple beach and water gear on hand for guests. For a winter visit, that flexibility is welcome.

Travelers from colder regions can slip from meetings or tours straight to the sand without a lot of planning.

One evening is devoted to St. Augustine’s Night of Lights. At first, I picture a standard seasonal display. Many cities hang holiday lights and run a festive trolley. St. Augustine’s version is on a different scale.

We ride an open trolley through town, which makes it easy to see everything. Buildings across the historic district are fully outlined in white lights. Hotels, restaurants, small shops, and even quieter corners all participate. The town seems to glow from every angle.

The atmosphere is relaxed. There are no heavy crowds on the streets, but plenty of people are out, enjoying the scene.

Faces are lit by the soft white bulbs, and you can feel the shared pleasure in the air. It is easy to understand why visitors fly in just for this experience.

For anyone coming from a snowbound city, sitting on an open trolley in mild air, surrounded by historic architecture wrapped in lights, is a very appealing way to spend winter.

The trip also includes a visit to San Sebastian Winery. “Florida wine” may surprise some travelers, and it certainly surprises me.

The facility is large and busy. On the tour, we hear production numbers in the millions of bottles each year. It is a serious operation, not a novelty stop.

Tasting the wines shows a commitment to quality and a clear sense of style. Any preconception that wine cannot be part of a Florida itinerary starts to fade.

Upstairs, the hospitality space makes a strong impression. I stay for lunch, which is carefully planned and beautifully served. The chef is creative and confident, and the food would be at home in any established culinary destination.

Dessert is the highlight. A plate arrives with a variety of sweets.

As a committed dessert lover, this is both a temptation and a test. One item stands out. A lemon custard that turns out to be the best I have ever tasted. It is bright and smooth and perfectly balanced. Even after the trip, that single bite stays in mind.

The St. Augustine Distillery continues the theme of local production. Here, the focus is on spirits. Our guide is energetic and engaging. He walks us through the process from grain to glass and points out the equipment and stages along the way. The smell of the mash and the cool air in the production area give the tour a strong sensory base.

Tastings at the end confirm that this is another serious player in the region, not just a quick stop added to fill time. Together, the winery and the distillery show that St. Augustine is not only about old buildings and pirate stories. It is also about craft drinks and the people behind them.

Jacksonville offers a very different feel. If St. Augustine is compact and historic, Jacksonville opens out along the St. Johns River. Our group visits the new riverfront plaza, where open space meets the water and offers wide views. The city skyline rises in front of us, and the bridges cross the river in strong lines of steel.

A river taxi ride gives another angle on the city. The day is cooler than expected, and the air on the water feels crisp. As we move along the river, I notice a “Manatee Crossing” sign. It looks like the kind of warning usually seen on a highway, but here it protects slow-moving manatees instead of cars. It adds a touch of quiet humor and underscores how urban life and wildlife meet along this stretch of water.

From the boat, Jacksonville’s mix of buildings, bridges, and natural elements becomes easier to appreciate.

For many travelers, a city comes into focus through its neighborhoods. In Jacksonville, that moment arrives at the Shoppes of Avondale along St. Johns Avenue. This is a walkable, tree‑lined area with low buildings and a friendly scale.

I take part in a tasting tour that stays within this compact district. Five stops, all very close to each other.

We visit Casbah, with its Moroccan theme and atmospheric interior. Brick sits in a historic 100‑year‑old building with wide windows that open to the street. Cork & Thyme offers wine in a relaxed bar setting. Peterbrooke tempts chocolate lovers with rich displays. Biscotti adds its own baked goods and treats.

The samples are moderate, but the variety is wide. As we move from one place to another, the neighborhood begins to feel familiar.

Local hosts mention a monthly block party here. On that day, merchants step outside, music plays, and the street fills with neighbors and visitors. My visit does not coincide with that event, yet it is easy to imagine. The area seems ready for it. Even on an ordinary day, the Shoppes of Avondale give a clear sense of how Jacksonville lives and eats away from the more formal attractions.

A familiarization tour has a specific purpose. It offers a series of snapshots rather than deep immersion in a single place.

This trip follows that pattern. I move from pirate history to colonial crafts. From hotel comfort to a town wrapped in holiday lights. From wine and spirits in St. Augustine to river views and neighborhood tastings in Jacksonville.

There is not enough time to explore every corner of either city, and that becomes part of the story. St. Augustine stands out as the oldest city in the United States, with a strong sense of its layered past and a surprising food and drink scene. Jacksonville shows its strength through the river, new public spaces, and a charming neighborhood that reveals local flavor one tasting at a time.

For readers considering this region, the message is simple. It is possible to combine history, coastal atmosphere, and genuine culinary experiences in a single trip. St. Augustine and Jacksonville are close enough to share a hotel base, yet different enough to offer two distinct impressions.

Soaring Over Cappadocia: A Land of Natural Wonders and Hidden Histories

Cappadocia, a region tucked into central Turkey, is one of those places you hear about and think, “Can it possibly live up to the hype?” After visiting, let me tell you—it does. With its dramatic landscapes shaped by nature, ancient underground cities, and centuries-old rock-carved churches, Cappadocia feels like stepping into another time and world. But here’s the thing: it’s not just for daydreams or overly polished travel brochures. It’s a real place with real people, everyday life, and a whole lot of history etched into its one-of-a-kind scenery.

Here’s a look at my experience in Cappadocia, a trip I won’t soon forget—and one I hope inspires you to venture here yourself.

Before I begin my narrative I must say that the organization and enjoyment of this trip would not have been possible without the logistics-related assistance of Equinox Travel and the luck of having Benjamin özmen as our guide.

Though I tried to put this trip together on my own, choosing hotels and doing a deep dig into research to find the main attractions of this area, I ultimately decided to hand it over to Equinox and have everything planned for us.

The itinerary they planned out was absolutely perfect, as was the hotel (Avantgarde chain) and the attractions you’ll read about below.

I also was not sure what a “guide” would add to our experience. After all, an attraction is an attraction.

It seemed excessive to have both a guide and a driver to escort us to these attractions, which were several miles apart.

But now, having enjoyed the experience, there would be no chance I’d ever do it on our own. Benjamin explained all the venues with extreme pride of his country, and it was a very relaxing experience to know everything was handled.

Floating Above a Fairy Tale

I’ll start with what’s likely the most popular activity in Cappadocia: hot air ballooning.

This is an activity you must book. The experience will begin with an early morning pick-up from your hotel. Then a buffet breakfast as you await your balloon ride.

Fellow travelers who experienced this report appreciation for the birds-eye view of the famed “fairy chimneys”—mushroom-shaped rock formations that look plucked out of a fantasy book—seem even more magical beneath the soft, golden light of dawn.

The Göreme Open-Air Museum

The Göreme Open-Air Museum: A Walk Through History

Once you’re back on solid ground, Cappadocia has much more to offer, and the Göreme Open-Air Museum should absolutely be on your list. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason. This place feels like walking through an outdoor history book.

The museum is essentially a collection of rock-cut churches and monasteries built directly into the region’s soft, volcanic rock. These aren’t just caves, though—they’re intricately designed interiors with stunning frescoes painted centuries ago. Two highlights here are the Karanlık Church and the Tokalı Church, both excellent examples of Byzantine art and architecture. The frescoes, which depict stories from the Bible, are beautifully done, even after all these years of wear and exposure.

One thing I really appreciated about Göreme is just how comfortable it feels. The history is tangible and immersive—you’re not peeking at it behind glass or from a distance; you’re stepping right into it. Imagining the lives of the early Christians who worshipped, lived, and perhaps sought safety here adds a whole other layer to the experience.

A quick tip: wear comfortable shoes. There’s a bit of climbing involved to explore the site fully, and you’ll want to spend a good chunk of time wandering from one church to the next without worrying about sore feet.

Paşabağ Valley: The Land of the Fairy Chimneys

If the Göreme Museum reveals Cappadocia’s spiritual past, Paşabağ Valley, also known as Monks Valley, shapes its mystical side. This is where you’ll find some of the most famous fairy chimneys—and they’re even more impressive up close than from above.

The formations vary in size, from towering spires to smaller, mushroom-shaped rocks, and the whole area feels like a giant, natural sculpture garden. It’s easy to see why this place has so many legends attached to it. One story claims that monks used to live inside these chimneys, turning the upper levels into their hermitages. Standing beneath these formations, it’s not hard to imagine someone retreating up there to meditate or find solace in the quiet.

The valley itself is incredibly peaceful. Beyond the chimneys, there’s an open, almost serene feel to the place—you could spend hours walking along the paths or just sitting in the shadows of these giant rock towers, taking it all in. It’s probably the most visually iconic part of Cappadocia and one that’s easy to explore at your own pace.

A Subterranean Marvel

Kaymaklı Underground City: A Subterranean Marvel

If you thought Cappadocia’s magic was all above ground, think again. One of the most fascinating parts of this region lies deep below its surface: the Kaymaklı Underground City.

This sprawling network of tunnels, rooms, and passageways was built thousands of years ago by early Christians seeking refuge from invasions. It’s an incredible feat of engineering, designed to house entire communities with living spaces, kitchens, storage areas, and even ventilation systems. The level of thought and effort that went into creating this city is mind-blowing.

Walking through Kaymaklı is a bit of an adventure. Some of the ceilings are low, requiring you to duck down as you move between rooms. It’s not so claustrophobic that you feel closed in, but you’ll definitely want to dress comfortably for the trek. The thrill of exploring this underground world is worth every carefully placed step.

It’s incredible to think about the people who spent years carving out this city and those who lived here. Their creativity and resilience shine through in every carved-out room, and the fact that these spaces are still standing today is a testament to their ingenuity.

Final Impressions

Cappadocia is one of those rare places that defies expectation. Sure, you’ve probably seen pictures of the fairy chimneys or heard about the balloon rides, but nothing prepares you for standing among these formations or floating above them at sunrise. It’s a place where history feels alive, woven into every rock, valley, and underground passage.

What I loved most is how accessible everything feels. Cappadocia is undeniably otherworldly, but it’s also incredibly grounded. There’s no need to dress up your experience here. It’s enough to simply be present—to walk through Göreme’s open-air churches, marvel at Paşabağ’s chimneys, or get a little muddy in the depths of Kaymaklı.

So, if you’re looking for a destination that sparks your imagination and lets you connect to something bigger than yourself, Cappadocia should be on your list.

Discovering Antalya: An Archaeological Odyssey Beyond the Beaches

When one thinks of Antalya, visions of sun-kissed beaches and vibrant coastal life often come to mind. Known as the Turkish Riviera, Antalya offers splendid weather and brilliant sunshine, capturing the imagination of travelers from around the world with luxurious resorts beckoning them to relax.

However, my recent journey, curated by Equinox Tours, revealed a side of Antalya rich with history, culture, and ancient marvels which even seasoned travelers like myself can find exhilarating.

Unveiling the Ancient Wonders of Perge

My adventure in Antalya was spearheaded by our knowledgeable guide, Bilge Usta.

Raised in the region, Bilge’s deep connection to the land and her academic background breathed life into the ruins and relics we encountered. Our first stop was Perge, a city that enchanted me with its extensive Roman ruins. Despite having never read about it, Perge’s magnificent architecture unfolded like a narrative, reminiscent of the affluent spots like Beverly Hills.

Walking through the grand theater, the colonnaded streets, and the stadium, one could imagine the grandeur that once defined this ancient metropolis.

Perge struck a chord with its historic embrace of leisure and health, its citizens indulging in the hamams much like today’s spa aficionados. Remarkably, these ancient inhabitants, akin to those in upscale modern communities such as Palm Beach, cherished physical fitness and socializing over gossip and tea within the bathhouses. Exploring Perge was an experience steeped in intrigue, its remnants reminding us of a bygone society’s vibrancy, forever etched in time.

Our journey continued to Aspendos, home to a remarkably well-preserved Roman theater revered for its astounding acoustics. Standing within this ancient structure, I was immersed in an auditory marvel where whispers were said to travel across the amphitheater, a testament to Roman engineering brilliance. Though the steep, vertiginous rows deterred me from climbing, exploring the alcoves was rewarding, unveiling layers of history that tied closely with the other ancient cities we’d visit. Side’s invitation to wander its ancient streets echoed the leisurely pursuits that marked its affluent past, akin to life in the Hamptons today. The harmony of historical grandeur with scenic beauty made Side not only a place of discovery but one of contemplation and admiration.

Between our exploratory excursions, visiting the Antalya Museum unearthed treasures that pulled the past into the present. The museum’s impressive collection, directly sourced from excavation sites, provided a window into the daily lives of ancient residents with artifacts like Roman statues and intricate sarcophagi, each telling tales of former glories.

The presence of personal items, such as the trousseau of a young bride, evoked a poignant connection to the human stories hidden within the stones. The museum, embodying Antalya’s archaeological richness, was a highlight that transported me further into the depths of its history.

Luxury and Leisure at Gloria Golf Resort

Beyond the archaeological treasures, our itinerary included a luxurious retreat at Gloria Golf Resort in Belek. While I don’t play golf myself, the resort’s charm transcends the game, extending an invitation to enjoy its beautifully designed grounds.

Dining in its exquisite facilities, I experienced flavors that rivaled upscale venues worldwide. Here, the rolling greens and the attentive service offered an authentic taste of Antalya’s hospitality, an experience enhanced by the resort’s seamless blend of natural beauty and sophisticated elegance.

Final Reflections on an Enriching Journey

While many visit Antalya for the allure of its beaches, my journey was a sojourn into a rich historical tapestry that Antalya weaves with incredible finesse. Under the expert guidance of Bilge Usta, what began as a simple tour unfolded into a profound exploration of Turkey’s Opulent past.

Whether you’re an aficionado of history or simply a traveler yearning for a unique experience, Antalya promises a narrative captured in ruins and echoes that still speak aloud through its quiet, ancient stones.

Cultural Wonders of Southeastern Türkiye

Southeastern Türkiye is a region teeming with rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and layers of culture that span millennia.

Often overshadowed by larger cities like Istanbul and Ankara, this area offers its own distinct wonders, from ancient archaeological marvels to serene river towns and traditional Turkish craftsmanship.

Over the course of three days, I immersed myself in the past and present of southeastern Türkiye, exploring sites that revealed the ingenuity and beauty of some of the world’s earliest civilizations.

Day One: Gaziantep – A Mosaic of History and Craftsmanship

Our journey began at the airport with a personal greeting from our excellent guide Tulga Kirilen, who would become a good friend in the course of our trip.

Our first visit was the vibrant city of Gaziantep, often referred to as the culinary capital of Türkiye. However, its offerings extend far beyond food.

This city is home to the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, the world’s largest mosaic museum, which opened to the public in 2011. As I stepped into its modern, minimalist building, I was instantly transported back thousands of years to the Roman-Hellenistic period.

The museum houses mosaics and artifacts rescued from the nearby ancient city of Zeugma, a once-thriving trade hub on the banks of the Euphrates River.

Much of Zeugma’s cultural treasure was unearthed in the early 2000s, just before parts of the city were submerged by the construction of the Birecik Dam. The preservation of these mosaics is remarkable—2,000 years of water and mud shielded their vibrant colors and intricate details from the elements. Standing in front of masterpieces like the famed Gypsy Girl Mosaic,

it’s easy to feel a connection to the stories and artistry of the past.

Gaziantep also offers a glimpse into its traditional craftsmanship. At Bakırcılar Çarşısı, or the Coppersmith Bazaar, lively rhythms of hammers and chisels echo through the air as artisans create intricate designs on copper cookware.

The bazaar dazzles with rows of polished copper pots, trays, and household items, each piece a testimony to the city’s enduring skills in metalcraft. Wandering through the narrow alleys of the bazaar feels like stepping into a living museum where age-old techniques continue to thrive.

Sacred Şanlıurfa

Day Two: Stunning Halfeti and Sacred Şanlıurfa

The next day began with a hearty Turkish breakfast before heading south to the quaint town of Halfeti, a peaceful riverside escape about a 1.5-hour drive from Gaziantep. Known as the “hidden gem” of Türkiye, Halfeti is famous for its partially submerged ruins caused by the construction of the Birecik Dam. A leisurely 40-minute boat ride on the Euphrates River revealed hauntingly beautiful scenes: stone walls and minarets peeking out from the water, remnants of the old town of Halfeti.

Halfeti’s tranquility is complemented by its rugged, picturesque backdrop of rocky hills dotted with caves and farmland. It was fascinating to see that even in these historic surroundings, goat herders and small-scale farmers continue to use the caves for daily living and storage—a tradition that has likely persisted for generations.

After lunch on board the boat, we continued to Şanlıurfa, a city with a powerful connection to both ancient history and religious tradition. Our first stop was Balıklıgöl, also known as the Pool of Abraham or the Sacred Fish Pond. Revered in Islamic tradition, this serene reflection pool is tied to the story of the prophet Abraham. According to legend, when Abraham was thrown into the fire by King Nimrod for rejecting idolatry, God transformed the flames into water and the burning logs into fish. Today, the pond is home to schools of sacred carp, which visitors feed as part of the local tradition.

Next came one of the most unforgettable events of the trip: a Turkish Traditional Night. Held in a luxurious banquet hall, the evening surprised me with a fusion of modern comfort and lively cultural celebration. A private room was set for our group of nine, complete with Turkish musicians, dancers, and a master chef skillfully crafting traditional dishes in copper pots reminiscent of those from Gaziantep’s bazaars. At one point, a group of local teachers added to the high spirits by spontaneously joining in the revelry, dancing along to the energetic rhythms. This evening of music, food, and camaraderie perfectly captured the essence of Turkish hospitality.

The World’s Oldest Megalithic Site

Day Three: Göbekli Tepe – The World’s Oldest Megalithic Site

The final day of our journey celebrated one of the region’s most extraordinary treasures—Göbekli Tepe, located just 30 minutes outside Şanlıurfa. This archaeological site has redefined our understanding of early human civilization. Considered the world’s oldest man-made religious structure, Göbekli Tepe dates back to approximately 9,500 BCE, predating Stonehenge by several millennia.

What makes Göbekli Tepe significant is its massive stone pillars, many of which are arranged in circular formations. These pillars, adorned with carvings of wild animals and abstract symbols, are thought to have had ritualistic significance for the early hunter-gatherer societies who built them. Excavations, led by the late German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt, revealed that these people likely came together from far and wide to construct this site—a monumental collaboration long before the advent of farming or the wheel.

Göbekli Tepe left me marveling at the ingenuity and spirituality of our ancestors. A subsequent visit to the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum enhanced the experience further, as life-size recreations brought the ancient world to life. The museum exhibits detail how the Neolithic people transitioned from subsistence hunting to domesticating grains and creating tools to process them. By the time you leave the museum, it becomes clear how revolutionary these early societies were in advancing human civilization.

Reflections on Southeastern Türkiye

As the trip came to a close, I felt a deep appreciation for Türkiye’s southeastern region and its unique mix of ancient wonders and vibrant traditions. Witnessing the cultural and historical layers of cities like Gaziantep, Halfeti, and Şanlıurfa reinforced just how much this corner of the world has to offer.

From the stunning mosaics of Zeugma and the sacred waters of Balıklıgöl to the mystical ruins of Göbekli Tepe, southeastern Türkiye invites visitors to step back in time and marvel at the ingenuity of ancient civilizations, while also enjoying the warmth and hospitality of modern Turkish culture.

Puerto Rico is a fun getaway for a weekend or just a long weekend. This is a roundup of how to make the most of your short stay.

The Palacio Provencal Hotel

Many people use Miami Beach as their benchmark for a tropical vacation – but have you considered Puerto Rico?

Though I’ve been to Miami Beach dozens of times for business conferences and pleasure, I had never been to Puerto Rico.

To satisfy my luxury hotel addiction, I chose the Palacio Provincial Hotel ffor my weekend in old San Juan

One of the primary reasons is that it was in the town of Old San Juan. This means that the attractions of this gorgeous, romantic city are literally seconds outside your door.

Another reason – perhaps the main one – is that it looked to be the highest-rated hotel in San Juan on many of the review sites. People liked the personal service, the peace and quiet, and the luxurious rooms and suites.

A skeptic by nature and rather jaded as far as luxury hotels go, I reserved judgment until I. Saw it for myself. After all, photos can be manipulated and guest experiences on these review websites can be exaggerated.

I’m pleased to report that the actual room is as good as it looks on the hotel website (link) and as nice as people raved about on the website.

As you step into the hotel’s grand foyer, you’re immediately transported back in time to the magic, mystery, and legend of Old San Juan.

I use the phrase “modern traveler” in quotes because I really appreciate and value the technology of easy-to-manipulate air conditioning. – this could be the most important feature of any hotel in this often warm region.

One of the standout features of the Palacio Provincial is its breathtaking courtyard. A lush oasis in the hotel’s heart, the courtyard is adorned with vibrant flowers, delicate fountains, and intricately tiled pathways. This serene space serves as a tranquil retreat where guests can relax, read a book, or enjoy a cup of local coffee while being enveloped by the soothing sounds of the bubbling fountains.

Now, let’s talk about the unique feature that sets the Palacio Provincial apart—the rooster motif in every room. The rooster, a symbol of vigilance and protection, holds great significance in the local culture. Isabella’s idea to incorporate this motif into the rooms adds a charming touch that reflects the spirit of the old town.

In each room, they subtly woven a beautifully crafted rooster emblem into the decor. Whether it’s embroidered on plush cushions or delicately etched onto wooden headboards, the rooster’s presence serves as a reminder of the town’s history and the hotel’s commitment to creating a memorable stay for your Puerto Rico weekend.

The Palacio Dining Experience

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served outdoors in the gorgeous historic courtyard.With advance notice, you can arrange to have the chefs prepare a multi-course dinner matched with wine.

Rooftop Bar and Pool

The rooftop pool is a great place to relax after a day of touring Old Town San Juan.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the Palacio Provincial Hotel offers an enchanting journey through time, blending history and modern luxury seamlessly.

With its exquisite architecture, serene courtyard, and unique rooster motif, it’s a testament to the dedication of its owner, Isabella Ramirez. While the hotel already shines as a unique destination, refining lighting arrangements, extending cafe hours, and enhancing the guest’s connection to the rooster motif could elevate the experience to even greater heights.

The owners of the Palacio also own the gorgeously restored Convento Hotel around the corner.

Touring the property, it was bustling with action and a lively bar.

This is a very cool restaurant located inside the T-Mobile District. You may see it as an amusement park of sorts for adults.

The space is filled with bars and restaurants all centered around a colorful, music-filled space where friends and families can gather.

I really loved the elegance of this restaurant which is designed with a rum still motif.

The circular bar is gorgeous, and sets the tone for the gorgeous dining room that continues on with the copper still theme.

Cocktails are a real attraction here, and quite clever. I ordered a Puerto Rican take on a Manhattan that had smoke coming out of it.

A artisanal cocktails, such as “Jardín de Edén” or “Mete Caña”, or our signature cocktail, “Ron y Tabaco,” prepared with añejo rum, tobacco-infused syrup, bitters, and garnished with smoked sugar cane.

The heat of the charcoal grill is palpable from the dining room in this open kitchen concept, where you can enjoy a selection of the best cuts grilled to perfection, such as the decadent Chateaubriand Steak, or for seafood lovers a fresh crispy Branzino, Lobster Tail, or Scallops.

Santaella Restaurant

Wow, this restaurant was such a winner!

The upbeat vibe rivaled the best restaurants in Paris and New York. Gorgeous patrons, and even more attractive food.

One of the reasons I wanted to see Puerto Rico is to experience a real cocoa farm – and then take advantage of that opportunity to visit the famous chocolate cafes and shops of Old San Juan.

Before we get to the fun part (the shops and chocolate tasting) here’s a brief history of chocolate in Puerto RIco.

Cocoa Production in Puerto Rico

The story of cocoa production in Puerto Rico is a narrative that is interwoven with the island’s rich cultural tapestry and its vibrant history.

As we journey from the inception of cocoa farming to its modern practices, we appreciate the golden beans that have given the Puerto Rican chocolate its distinguished place in the world of gastronomy.

Early Cocoa Production Beginnings

The birthplace of cocoa, the Americas, has been home to this majestic crop for thousands of years. In Puerto Rico, a lush island graced with fertile lands and a tropical climate.

Here cocoa found a welcoming home.

The earliest traces of cocoa production in Puerto Rico can be traced back to the Spanish colonial period. Yet, it took a while for cocoa to become a staple, as sugar cane took center stage during the initial phases of agricultural development.

The Flourishing Period of Puerto Rican Chocolate

Cocoa started to significantly flourish in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Farmers recognized the potential of the land, the ideal climate conditions, and the rich, volcanic soil, which were perfect for nurturing the cocoa trees.

To plant cocoa, farmers prepare the land meticulously, ensuring optimal soil conditions to nurture the young saplings. The plants are generally placed in shades to protect them from direct sunlight, leveraging the canopy of taller trees to provide the necessary shade. This method not only ensures the healthy growth of the cocoa trees but also promotes biodiversity, creating a haven for various flora and fauna.

Puerto Rico witnessed a decline in cocoa production in the latter part of the 20th century due to a combination of factors including natural disasters, economic challenges, and the onset of pests and diseases that affected the yield. However, in recent years, there has been a resurgence, a sort of renaissance in the cocoa farming sector.

The new generation of farmers, equipped with modern knowledge and a profound respect for the land, has adopted sustainable and organic farming practices. The Semila Cocoa Farm Experience

Visit to Cocoa Farm

I was able to visit a cocoa farm called Semila now a woman-owned business with Decenia Vega, daughter of founders, in charge.

The estate spans 43 acres of raw land, cocoa plants, and trees bearing tropical fruit.

Decenia has modernized techniques and equipment over the years, but stays true to her parents’ focus on sustainability and organic farming practices. The nursery uses bio-pesticides and natural compost, while the orchard relies on shade cover rather than synthetic chemicals for pest management.

The Semila Tasting Experience

Decenia’s chef husband gave us a chocolate tasting right in the middle of their jungle-like property, in which we tasted chocolate made from their high-quality beans with Siervas Passion Fruit flavored whisky. A delicious pairing.

The Chocobar Cortes Experience

In the heart of Old San Juan, where the cobblestone streets wind their way through colorful colonial buildings, a small chocolate shop stands as a beacon of creativity and community.

Stepping into this unique, colorful cafe and shop is like stepping into an amusement park. The scent of chocolate is everywhere.

Even the delicious cocktails can be chocolate-infused!

As I met with the Chocobar Cortez owner Elaine Shehab, I was given hot chocolate and a cube of cheddar cheese, and then advised to put the cheese into the chocolate. This is a Cortes tradition, and the result was a creamer experience

As I learned about the history of the place I sampled many things on the extensive brunch menu – offerings include French Toast, salads, and salmon.

Virtually everything on the menu has a chocolate element, such as chocolate shavings or chocolate salt.

I loved the colorful decorations, bright yellow walls, and overall cheerful ambiance of this place that was bustling with people every time I walked by it.

Owner Elaine Shehab

Elaine is the creative mind behind Chocobar Cortés. Together with her husband, Ignacio Cortés, CEO of Chocolate Cortés, she played with the idea of opening a chocolate concept for many years. After thorough research around the world, they set out to create a unique concept that celebrated the family’s rich history where Chocolate Cortés played the starring role.

Fundación Cortés

Established in 2012, Fundación Cortés is a private non-profit organization that, through art and humanities, seeks to promote the strengthening of the values of the Caribbean people. It’s located on the second and third floor above the restaurant and features temporary exhibitions. Adelisa Gonzalez-Lugo is its executive director and creates dynamic programs.

Montadero Chocolates

As I sat down with the owner of Montadero Chocolate, I couldn’t help but be drawn into the rich tapestry of their family history.

The story of Montadero Chocolate begins with a matriarchal figure, Doña Mita, the grandmother of the current owner. She was the guardian of a unique culinary tradition, one that revolved around the art of making chocolate.

“As children, we were fortunate enough to have experienced her chocolate creations firsthand. Doña Mita’s secret was the cacao grown on a family farm.”

“In her own childhood, Doña Mita learned the meticulous process of fermenting, roasting, and refining cacao to create the most exquisite hot chocolate, following her father’s cherished recipe. But as fate would have it, when our beloved grandmother passed away, this precious tradition was on the brink of extinction.”

“None of her children had learned the art of making chocolate, despite knowing the recipes by heart.”

“It was only in 2017, during an unexpected journey to Switzerland, that the spark to revive the family’s chocolate tradition was kindled. My wife, Kenia, and I had embarked on a trip dedicated to cheese tasting, but fate had other plans.

“Hurricane Maria swept through Puerto Rico, leaving destruction in its wake. The very farm that held the key to our family’s chocolate heritage lay in ruins. It was at that moment that I felt a profound sense of responsibility – a duty to restore what had been lost, so that our family tradition could live on.”

“Our journey to resurrect the art of making chocolate began with interviews with family members. Slowly but surely, we gathered the necessary information to rekindle the tradition. We embarked on exploratory trips to the mountains where our great-grandfather had harvested cacao, delved into countless conversations with our family, and painstakingly recovered the treasured recipe of Grandma Mita.”

Montadero Chocolate is more than just a homage to the family’s past; it’s a commitment to quality and authenticity. Their cacao is meticulously selected, ranked among the best 50 cacaos worldwide, promising the most indulgent chocolate experience for connoisseurs.

MAPR stands as a time capsule that encompasses a broad spectrum of art, starting from the 17th century to contemporary artworks.

You can stroll at your leisure across all four floors, with 90 minutes quite enough time to see all the exhibits and stroll in the gorgeous garden.

The permanent collection is a well-rounded representation of Puerto Rican artistry, featuring renowned artists such as José Campeche and Francisco Oller.

Their contributions mark significant milestones in the Puerto Rican art landscape, offering visitors insight into the cultural heritage through visual narratives.

I stood in front of the portrait of as José Campeche for quite some time – his work is all over the city of Old San Juan and he even volunteered to defend Puerto Rico from the British invasion.

The Sculpture Garden: Where Art Meets Nature

In addition to its indoor galleries, MAPR houses a 2.5-acre sculpture garden that seamlessly merges native flora with compelling art installations. It is an open space where visitors can appreciate art amidst natural surroundings, offering a serene atmosphere that encourages contemplation and connection with the artworks.

Loíza: A Canvas of Cultures and A Land of Freedom

Steeped in a rich past that bridges continents, the vibrant Puerto Rican town of Loíza stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of cultures that have come to define it.

The Dawn of Cultures – The Taino Epoch

Long before Spaniards touched Puerto Rican soil, the region was a rich mosaic of indigenous cultures.

The Taíno tribes were the original custodians of this land, nurturing a connection to the soil, rivers, and forests that surround Loíza.

They bestowed upon Loíza a rich legacy of traditions and spirituality, the echoes of which reverberate through time, enriching the cultural tapestry that the region boasts today.

Visit to the studio of Samuel Lind 

This internationally famed artist makes his studio in the traditional lightweight structures in the area.

He’s welcoming and well-spoken about his art, which many feel represents the life of this specific region. His studio is crammed with paintings ranging from still life to vivid renditions of local dances and festivals. His work offers a glimpse into the deep-rooted African heritage that blossomed to become a cornerstone of Loíza’s identity.

Don Castor Ayala: Festival Masks  

Across the street from Samuel Lind you will find a hut run by the children of the late famed mask maker Raul Ayala.
You will find a visual history of how these masks are made from coconut, the process of drying and cutting these coconuts, then how they are decorated.

Beyond the hut one can see the Bomba drums also made by the Ayala family.

Bomba music, a vibrant heart-beat driven dance form, emerged as a soulful expression of this community, narrating tales of joy, sorrow, and the pulsating rhythm of daily life through mesmerizing dance movements.

Puerto Rico Culture – Festival Dynamics

The unique fusion of Spanish and African cultures is vibrantly apparent in the joyous celebrations that grace Loíza. Foremost among them is the “Fiestas Tradicionales en Honor a Santiago Apóstol”, a rich and colorful celebration that brings to life the rich folklore woven through centuries of cultural blending.

The ‘Vejigantes’, adorned in whimsical, devilish masks, become the vibrant heartbeat of the festival, enchanting locals and visitors alike with a dynamic play of colors and rhythms that resonate with joyful celebration and communal harmony.

The Modern Epoch—A Melodic Blend of Past and Present

In addition to all the sightseeing activities, you’ll find some good places to pop in for casual and fine dining during the day.

Puerto Rico Culture – Abracadabra Counter Café

This is a fun casual café where people can enjoy a culinary experience and also a local theater performance.

The owner loves magic, and the tables offer a variety of objects suggesting the magical theme.

The cafe is located in the “hip” art-focused neighborhood of Santurce, where murals are found on almost every wall.

Puerto Rico Culture – Santaella: Fine Dining Restaurant

Dinner at Santaella is a “must” for any visit to Puerto Rico. It was the most dynamic and cleverly-decorated restaurant I saw – both the décor and the gorgeously dressed guests.

Known for its cocktails, Chef Santaella offers an incredible menu with the best fish I’ve had in ages.

After dinner, be certain to walk around and check out the vibrant street scene.

In his time, James Beard had been considered one of the leading gastronomists of his time. Today his foundation lives on, supporting the creative efforts of chefs across the United States and beyond.

On July 10, the James Beard Foundation welcomed three top San Antonio chefs to showcase their cuisine to both journalists and foodies at the new James Beard Foundation space in Manhattan.

Marc Anderson, President & CEO of Visit San Antonio, was on hand to witness the event, held at the new Platform by the James Beard Association Space. “We are honored to be the first city to activate the new space and look forward to showcasing San Antonio’s rich culinary culture.”

The superb dishes, each representing the mastery of their individual chef, were paired with a wine or beer from the best San Antonio wineries and breweries.

The chefs were Chef John Russ of Clementine, Chef Nicola Blaque of The Jerk Shack, and Chef Sofia Tejeda of Hotel Emma.
Each chef gave a little introduction to themselves at the end of the program.

Chef Nicola Blaque explained that after ten years in the Army, she was passionate about presenting the Jamaican food of her childhood to the local San Antonio community. She also gave a very moving speech about how her restaurant and career grew from a dream to becoming a celebrity chef in the region.

Chef Sofia Tejeda spoke about growing up in a Mexican immigrant family where she was expected to become a doctor or lawyer like others in her family – and that no one, initially, was supportive of her dream to work in the kitchen.

Chef John Russ delivered an impassioned story of his own career path, and how the world has become united by food.

City of Contrasts

Lausanne shines as a lovely city of contrasts. Downtown, you will see ornate 18^th century Belle Epoch edifices cheek by jowl with contemporary office buildings and shops. You can dine in sleek Michelin-rated restaurants or enjoy an old-fashioned “tractor competition” in Lavaux, the wine-growing region.

The Romans established a trading colony here in the first century BC. Soldiers would pass through the region on their way to defend their empire.

You’ll want to check out the window displays of the enchanting boutiques lining the stone-paved streets as you descend the Cathedral. Your reward is a treat in one of the chocolate shops in the Place de la Palud.

This bustling, sunny pedestrian-only area delights with its shops, cafes, and bubbling fountains.

You will enjoy strolling around these cobblestone streets, savoring the perfect cup of coffee, and listening to a strolling musician.

Foodies will rejoice in the Farmers’ market that takes place every Saturday, offering the freshest of vegetables, fruit, and cheeses from the mountains.

Tradition: The Cathedral Watchtower

Perhaps you recall fairy tales in which a town crier goes around the village, calling “all is well.”

Lausanne holds a similar tradition.

Each night between 10p.m and 2a.m, a watchman (more recently a watchwoman) cries out the hour from the belfry of the Cathedral.

The view is of the green park and Lake Geneva in the distance. A great place for a cocktail and some delicious cheese and meat.

The Flon is the heart of Lausanne. At once ancient and modern, this area pulses with activity. Once a district of warehouses, it is now the trendiest area for restaurants, bars, clubs, cinemas, boutiques, and exhibition spaces.

You will find many restaurants to choose from, including the traditional restaurant Blue Lezard, featured in the “Taste my City” package. This packet of experiences helps travelers save money and see landmark attractions as curated by Lausanne locals.

The Blue Lezard restaurant offers traditional Lausanne cuisine, and lots of it. The friendly wait staff speaks English perfectly.

The Berceau des Sens, 1* Michelin is located in the École Hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL).

This is one of the first hotel schools in Europe. Students attend with the goal of running a top quality hotel in a management capacity.

That said, they must learn every task in a hotel such as cooking, serving, acting as a wine sommelier, and even housecleaning.

In addition to cooking the food, he must oversee a new student staff every two weeks.

This is a very cool, “insider” restaurant marked by a relaxed décor, servers with topknots and tattoos, and FUN cuisine. Some may call it “fusion.” I couldn’t decide between salmon tartar or a shrimp dish, so I was able to order a “trio” containing these two items.

On this relatively warm April night, the outdoor terrace beckoned, but our reservation was for the restaurant’s interior.

The chefs and the servers pride themselves on the farm-to-market quality of their cuisine, and their unique spot in the Lausanne restaurant scene.

Lavaux: Switzerland’s Winegrowing Region

Wine from Switzerland enjoys fame for two key reasons: it is of excellent quality, and there is very little of it on the international market. It’s almost impossible to taste a Swiss wine outside of the country.

This is one reason why I treasured our visit to Lavaux, the country’s key winemaking region.

The second reason is that though I’ve been to virtually every wine-growing country in Europe, South America, and most of the USA, Lavaux offers the most breathtaking vineyard areas I’ve seen.

Why? Virtually every vineyard has a stunning view of shimmering Lake Geneva, and the Swiss Alps rising in the distance. When the sun is shining down, the vista is magical.

Sweetening the visit is Lavaux’s location, just about 45 minutes by train from the center of Lausanne.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage site (since 2007), this bucolic winegrowing region was first established by the ancient Romans.
Standing near the vineyards, I could almost visualize the soldiers climbing down from the alps towards the hilly region below. As early experts in viticulture, they must have been quite pleased to see how well the topography of Lavaux is well suited to the vine.

Vine terraces can be traced back to the 11th century, when Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries controlled the area.

Lavaux

Stepping off the train at the Grandvaux stop, one finds oneself standing at the top of a steep hill overlooking vineyards. Lake Geneva and the towering Alps artistically arrange themselves for your pleasure in the background.

This historical wine-growing region stretches for over eighteen miles along the south-facing northern shores of Lake Geneva, considered the Swiss Riviera (sometimes called the Montreux Riviera).

Lavaux: Pastoral Wonderland

On this warm, sunny April day, Lavaux looks to be a pastoral wonderland. From this vista, it’s almost impossible to believe that Lavaux proper includes more than a dozen tiny villages, including the lakeside capital of Cully, site of the famous Cully jazz festival (created 1983).

Yet after walking for nearly a half hour through the meandering stone pathway leading to the Maison Lavaux, the only living entity encountered were a couple grafting vines with their dog serving as company.

The Maison Lavaux thrives as an exhibition space, tracing the historical and cultural aspects of Lavaux. The exhibition space divides itself into several themes in three separate rooms. Information about the exhibit appears on signs, on pamphlets, and in an audio app that can be used with your smartphone.

The most interesting of the themes is a mural depicting the townspeople carrying on daily tasks (swimming in the lake, interacting with tourists).

One of these illustrations showcases the Championnat du Monde des Tracassets (small tractor competition), that under normal circumstances, occurs every two years. Because of COVID related closures, they delayed this competition for nearly four years.

Learning about this, we returned the next day to catch the 22nd year of this event live.

Lunch with the Winemaking Joly Family

Jacques and Aurelia Joly are a friendly French-speaking couple who appear to enjoy their work as vignerons and ambassadors to the Lavaux region. They own a beautiful home in the center of the town, with their vineyards some distance away.

The couple have divided their responsibilities so that Madame Joly, with her education in the culinary arts, prepares meals for guests and covers everything related to hospitality. Monsieur Joly devotes himself to the vineyards and also to the winemaking as the family has their cellar within their home.

Madame Joly explaining that they offer a variety of experiences to guests. For example, during spring, summer and fall, their terrace is open for wine tasting. Guests can also plan for a multi-course meal paired with their wines.

Guests craving an authentic experience in Lavaux can rent an apartment on their property.

The couple also have a separate apartment for guests who crave an authentic experience in Lavaux.

The Joly Lunch and Tasting

Monsieur Joly led a master class style tasting, pouring some of the many wines in his portfolio, and then explaining both the grapes used, the laws regulating them, and the process of production.

After the tasting, Mrs. Joly presented a delicious three course lunch produced with local products.

Domaine Potterat

Strolling through the sunlit vineyards to Domaine Potterat might have taken more than a half-hour. Yet time passed quickly on this striking spring day in which every flower opened to share its delicious fragrance.

M. Potterat greeted us at the entrance of his 600 year old winery, where his family had been making wine for generations.

Sitting on an outdoor table filled with the perfume of thousands of newly opened spring flowers, we tasted his magical wines.

Whites included the native Chasselas but we also tasted Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

Aside from the rare wines, the winery itself is a delight to visit. Much of its construction date to the 14^th century and even Roman times, with the ancient press still in use.

As a special treat, M. Potterat led us downstairs, below the winery, for a tasting of a 2105 Chesselas.

Experts consider the Chesselas grape excellent for the production of an easy drinking, simple wine, but M. Potterat proved that when grown and vinified by the right winemaker the wine can improve with age.

Läderach Chocolate Workshop

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory remain one of my favorite childhood movies, so you can imagine my excitement of attending a chocolate workshop.

Frankly, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Yet our instructor made it an educational and enjoyable experience.

The Läderach chocolate experience begins when you enter the shop. Madame, our instructor for the day, showed us an area within the demonstration and chocolate making room where we can wash our hands, then sanitize our phones.

Next, she showed us the finished display of the style of chocolate bar they expected us to replicate.

We had complete freedom in its design, the ingredients used with the chocolate (like almonds), and the type of chocolate (milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate) used in the bar.

Madame explained how we would create an attractive design on the front of the bar, via the use of a rectangular-shaped mold like a jello mold.

The Tracing Paper

The idea is to:

1. Consider a design (it can be a word or picture)
2. Use the tracing paper to draw it
3. Put the tracing paper beneath the transparent mold.

Once this step is completed, the fun part begins.

We use the three different colors of chocolate (light brown, dark brown, white) to sketch the design with cone-shaped wax paper.

We left our chocolate design to harden.

Then we filled the rectangular mold with the chocolate of our choice. I chose white.

While the liquid chocolate bar hardens, Madame gave us a brief introduction into chocolate production, beginning with the beans and how they are collected and fermented.

The more interesting aspect is that in Mexico, chocolate had historically taken on a mystical character. Though not a narcotic, the native people used chocolate in their magical ceremonies.

Curiously, chocolate makers in other cocoa growing regions (Jakarta, other Asian countries) didn’t make the association between chocolate and the supernatural.

Experience Fondue at Pinte Besson

Travelers whisper that this is the oldest restaurant in Lausanne. Pinte Besson

It is named after the “pint, a measure which varies according to the regions but disappeared with the advent of the metric system (1795).

I enjoyed my dinner visit here with friends. Scattered around the room were couples enjoying the romantic vibe and groups of friends. The owners describe the menu as “traditional.” In keeping with the theme I ordered a cheese fondue with cognac and mushrooms.

Eat-Me Restaurant

Though I’ve enjoyed the many delicious meals throughout Switzerland, some of them literally fit for a king (in former palaces, now luxury hotels) one of my favorite dining experiences was had in Eat-Me.

Perhaps it’s the trendy vibe that seemed so familiar to my Los Angeles rots and current habitat in Manhattan. But this restaurant is stunning in terms of architecture, and a place for major people watching.

During our visit, large tables dominated. It seemed a place to go for celebrations among friends or family. But couples were to be seen as well sipping exotic cocktails.

Our group of nine enjoyed a long table near the see-thru kitchen. Our dapper waiter, dressed in an elegant suit, explained the “small plate” concept of the restaurant.

In short, guests would share a series of small plates as they came from the kitchen. We enjoyed roughly seven dishes, including dessert comprising burrata cheese, scallops, pasta, and various meat dishes.

The cuisine was creatively plated, tasted farm fresh.

If I lived in Lausanne, I’d be a regular.

The Olympic Museum

The Olympic Museum houses both permanent and temporary exhibits, offering over 10,000 artifacts. Enter the museum and a display of the Olympics as it existed in ancient Greece will greet you. The signage (in both French and English) explains that the candidates for the games must be from the noble families.

The museum was founded on June 23rd of 1993, with the goal of tracing the origins of the Olympics from Ancient Greece to the present. Covering three entire floors, visitors will learn about the history of the games in a variety of media.T

Platform 10

Platform 10 is more than a museum. A series of permanent and temporary exhibition spaces housed in separate buildings, one can describe it as a cultural platform within the city..

Montreux Jazz Festival @ The Fairmont Montreux Palace Hotel

The Montreux Jazz Festival was created on 18 June 1967, founded in large part by Claude Nobs, a jazz-loving executive in the tourism bureau.

Having spent time in New York, Mr. Nobs thought launching a jazz festival in Montreux would be a great way to put the region on the map.

I heard this story at the historic Fairmont Montreux Palace hotel from Mathieu Jaton, once Mr. Nobs assistant and now the festival’s CEO.

With his charisma and dynamic way of speaking, Mr. Jaton described the very humble origins of the Montreux Jazz Festival, which relied more on Mr. Nobs charm and love of music than cash to hire the Jazz greats.

In one story, he describes how Claude Nobs enticed Aretha Franklin with Swiss chocolate instead of her usual fee.

The festival has changed over the decades, with some guests paying top dollar for seats, while others enjoy the free concerts by talented unknowns.

The Fairmont Montreux Place Hotel

Created in 1881 the hotel retains its Old World, Belle Epoque charm. Musicians stay here during the jazz festival, with many musicians, novelists, and others choosing to live in the hotel. Long-term guests included Vladimir Nabokov.

Switzerland Glacier Express - Excellence Class

The novel and film Murder on the Orient Express always intrigued me.

I wondered what it would be like to travel on a first-class train. And in the 1940s, the period in which the author set the novel people dressed fashionably too.

The experience was incredible. We boarded in the Swiss village of Chur. Max, our captain, met us outside the Excellence class train car and escorted us and our luggage on board ,

From that point on, he poured an assortment of different wines and Champagne to match our many courses. Each seat had headphones and an entertainment device where guests could hear more about the region.

Final Thoughts About my Lausanne Experience

Most everyone in the world has heard of the Swiss Alps and the beauty of Lake Geneva.

We’ve heard of the fine Swiss watches.

Yet it took a near week-long visit to Lausanne to discover its true magic.

Magic is not a word normally used with travel. Yet the surprise is discovering that the picture-perfect postcard image of Lausanne is close to reality.

Here are some reasons.

1. Easy On/Off Transportation

As a child in Los Angeles, I’d been fascinated by a Disneyland ride called the people-mover. Adults from cities with mass-transportation likely noted it was like a modern day subway, but for an LA kid in a car-oriented city, it seemed so cool.

Lausanne re-awakened that “cool” factor with its network of interconnecting local Metro, train system, and even boats which are available to tourists under a multi-day pass.

Our hotel, the 4-star Movenpick facing Lake Geneva, was less than 3 minutes from the metro. The metro connected to trains that could take us to virtually any region within Switzerland. With a single pass, it was easy and even faster to go from the Movenpick Hotel to a restaurant in the Flon district than a taxi.

2. A Hundred Picture Perfect Views a Minute

No exaggeration here. Every Lausanne district vibrates with personality. And it’s fun to snap the different eras in its history, represented by its modern, medieval, and Belle Epoque architecture.

Yet despite snapping hundreds of pictures, my favorite photos all include Lake Geneva with the Alps in the background.

I’ve appreciated this incredible view several times a day, beginning with breakfast at both the Movenpick and Beau Riveage hotels.

Then, during the day when walking toward the Metro or train.

Usually at lunch, too, when dining at an outdoor café. The list is endless.

3. The kindness of the Lausanne People

Genteel people with good manners exist in every city. But in Lausanne there are simply more of them.

Lausanne has so much to offer, from the affordable pleasures of witnessing a small tractor competition near the sun-soaked vineyards to the delights of a grand hotel like the Beau-Rivage.

Swiss Travel System Pass

As a longtime travel journalist, I’ve made my way across Europe in trains, planes, taxis, busses, private cars, and even something called a “Bla Bla” car in France and Italy.

Yet nothing can compare to the ease, comfort, and affordability of the Swiss Travel Pass.

Italian Black Truffles

Celebrity chefs tantalize wealthy A-list clients with black truffles imported from Italy. Shaved over pasta and other dishes, their high price gives them the moniker “black gold.”

Yet did you know that in the middle-ages, people considered black truffles the work of devils and witches?

The Italian Truffle

Truffles grow in the rich, dark forests of Italy.

Umbria is rich in black Italian truffles, especially in areas like Valneria.

Elisabetta and her brother Leonardo Matteucci grew up in Valneria, a region famous for truffles. The siblings’ great grandfather had been a well-known truffle hunter, owning truffle-rich parts of the forest. In the 1960s, the elder Matteucci clan had built a family laboratory to weigh, clean, and process the truffles. But it wasn’t until 2007 that the siblings made a company out of truffles.

The Valnerina black Italian Truffle factory is an elegant place (as you would expect of a luxury product). It boasts a gorgeous showroom and dining area to sample the company’s many truffle-centered products.

Yet the real treat is the opportunity to go on a truffle hunt with their trusted truffle hunter and his dogs.

The Truffle Hunt

Imagine walking down to the green forest in the early morning mist, the sound of birds in the air and crunch of leaves underfoot.

When one dog darts to a tree, tail wagging and nose to the ground, the hunter follows. As the morning hunt progressed, the dogs were clearly in competition with one another. Every time they found a truffle, they’d receive a treat and a generous hug.

Each season offers a different color truffle, and with it, a different taste profile. Chefs made some truffles into a smooth paste, while other truffles are specifically used to shave over dishes such as pasta and omelets.

 After the Black Italian Truffle Hunt

After the hunt, they laid the “black gold” treasure onto a scale. Eight truffles, the size of large rocks, competed for space. When I was told the hunt yielded $356 dollars’ worth of truffles, I gasped. A tiny slice of the black truffles would cost more than $100 in a Manhattan restaurant. The entire morning’s bounty would price well over $20,000 at a retail level.

Once weighed, the truffles enter the cleaning phase. The process is just to hold them under running water and scrape them with a vegetable brush. Processing comes next.

The Feast

As the siblings discussed their family and the black Italian truffle tradition, we enjoyed the fruits of our labor (well, the labor of the dogs mostly).

Chefs can serve truffles in a variety of ways, most commonly on toast but also shaved over softly cooked eggs and hand-rolled pasta.
