Bosco di Medici Wines

Bosco de’ Medici Winery in Pompeii

Certain nights linger in the soul, and my evening at Bosco de’ Medici—a family-run winery just steps from the ancient ruins of Pompeii—is one I won’t forget.

This magical place offers more than just wine; it’s a full-sensory immersion into history, landscape, and the timeless beauty of the Campanian countryside. The night began with a twilight tour of the vineyards—under the full moon, no less.

The moonlight shimmered off the vines. Bathing the rows in silver, and giving the tour an ethereal, almost otherworldly atmosphere.

I felt so connected to the millennia of winemakers who came before.

A Journey Through Time

We rolled through the property in two open jeeps, beginning an evening that blended history, archaeology, and wine into a single narrative thread.

One unforgettable stop was at the site of a fascinating archaeological discovery: the perfectly preserved body of a Roman actor.

Unearthed right on the grounds of the estate, this individual is believed to have lived during the 1st century A.D., and remarkably, appears to have been embalmed—a rare practice in Roman times, and even rarer for slaves.

Historians concluded he may have been once enslaved and became beloved by the public for his talent, possibly a court jester-style figure favored by nobility. His preservation and burial spoke to the reverence he must have inspired.

I had seen his remains earlier in the week at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples—experiencing the vineyard where he once walked added a powerful, personal layer to history.

Walking with the Ancient Vines

As the tour continued, we passed through vineyard rows believed to mirror ancient Roman planting layouts. These rows showcased the winery’s commitment to reviving historical viticulture methods. It was easy—while bathed in soft moonlight—to imagine Roman vintners tending these rows, harvesting grapes destined for amphorae rather than stainless steel tanks.

Speaking of which, the heart of Bosco de’ Medici is an elegant blend of ancient and modern winemaking practices. At the winery itself, we had the chance to step into their cellar, where old clay amphorae stand beside rows of stainless steel vats and oak barrels. Their approach pays homage to tradition while fully embracing contemporary enological precision.
A Moonlight Feast Under the Vines

Our tour ended as all perfect evenings should: at the table. Under a pergola roof woven with vines heavy with grapes—so close you could almost reach out and touch them—we sat for dinner.

The setting was sublime: candlelight, a warm summer breeze, and the gentle hum of conversation floating beneath a full moon.

We enjoyed a thoughtfully curated selection of Bosco de’ Medici wines, starting with two crisp whites that danced with notes of citrus and wild herbs, followed by a delicate rosato whose pale hue belied its expressive character.
Later, came full-bodied reds deep in color, elegant in structure, and unmistakably volcanic in character — each one complex, mineral-driven, and distinctly Pompeian in soul.

I must confess, I’m the kind of person who prefers a dry, tannic red — something with spine and age — and these did not disappoint. Their premium pricing reflects the careful craftsmanship and the effort involved in growing grapes on this historic land, especially those from vines with ancient lineage.
But beyond the wines? The food. I’m not exaggerating when I say the risotto I had that night rewired my expectations. It was creamy and structured, perfectly matched to the bolder, earthier whites. As someone who finds the light Provençal style too mild, this was heaven.

A Living Winery with an Eye on the Future

Bosco de’ Medici may be rooted in ancient soil, but it’s very much alive in the present. Established just over a decade ago, the winery is the vision of a local family whose goal is not only to produce exceptional wines but also to create exceptional experiences. Events play a central role here—last night, for example, a wedding celebration unfolded nearby, filling the space with joy and music. It’s the kind of setting where history becomes a backdrop for new beginnings.

The team at the winery couldn’t have been warmer or more hospitable. Their warmth, paired with incredible weather and scenery, makes this one of the most romantic event spaces in southern Italy. If you’re planning a wedding, anniversary, or simply a memorable evening under the stars, Bosco de’ Medici delivers in every way.

A Taste of the Past, A Toast to the Present

What struck me most about this visit was how seamlessly wine, history, and storytelling come together here. In one night, we touched the lives of people long gone, tasted wine born of volcanic soil, and feasted under vines that whisper myths into the night breeze. Bosco de’ Medici is far more than a winery—it’s a time machine disguised as a vineyard.

As we raised a final glass of red to the night sky, I realized that something magical happens when you drink wine where emperors once ruled, artists were immortalized, and vines never stopped growing. And I’ll carry that night with me, in every sip of wine that follows.
