Tenuta Bellafonte

In Montefalco, tradition often defined the pace of change in the past.

Now in the future, Tenuta Bellafonte represents a more recent, highly considered interpretation of the region.

Founded in the early 2000s, it reflects a modern approach to Montefalco. One that combines technical precision, sustainability, and a strong sense of place.

Its founder is Peter Heilbron, who left a career in the international beverage industry to build a boutique estate in Umbria.

Located near Bevagna, in the small village of Torre del Colle, the property extends across approximately 30 hectares, with around 11 hectares under vine and the remainder dedicated to olive groves, woodland, and agricultural land.

From the outset, the project was conceived with a focus on quality over scale.

The objective at Bellafonte is to reinterpret Montefalco’s native varieties, particularly Sagrantino, through a contemporary lens.

All while maintaining a strong connection to terroir. This can be viewed as a refinement of tradition with an emphasis on balance, drinkability, and precision.

The estate works primarily with Sagrantino and Sangiovese for reds. Alongside a commitment to expressing site through careful vineyard management and minimal intervention in the cellar.

That objective is supported by a combination of organic farming practices and thoughtful technical choices.

The vineyards are cultivated without chemical herbicides, relying instead on mechanical soil work and natural fertilization to maintain balance in the ecosystem.

Harvesting is carried out by hand, with strict selection of fruit.

In the cellar, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and wines are neither fined nor filtered, preserving their structure and vitality.

Aging takes place in large Slavonian oak barrels, reinforcing a style that favors integration over overt oak influence.

The resulting wines reflect this approach.

Sagrantino retains its defining structure and depth, with firm tannins and layered dark fruit, but is presented with a clarity that makes it more accessible over time.

The focus is on proportion rather than power—allowing the strongly tannic grape’s intensity to be expressed without excess weight.

Across the range, there is a consistent emphasis on balance and transparency.

This style aligns with broader shifts taking place across Montefalco.

As the region gains greater international attention, producers are responding to evolving consumer expectations.

This is especially true in key export markets.

When you visit, you will find increasing interest in wines that are expressive but approachable. This translates to less reliance on extended aging and more flexibility in how they are consumed.

Bellafonte’s approach sits naturally within this context, offering wines that maintain regional identity while adapting to contemporary preferences.

Beyond the wines themselves, the estate experience is a defining element of Bellafonte. The property is visually striking, set against a backdrop of rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves. This estate has a sense of scale and design that immediately sets it apart.

I was rather struck when we were guided into a restored farmhouse with many bedrooms onto two levels that is perfectly positioned for a multigenerational of family vacation.

I had asked many questions about the services available – such as could you ask for daily housekeeping? Can you ask for a chef to come and prepare the family meal?

The answer was that all the services were available, but that many families prefer just to be by themselves and cook dinner together.

The outdoor areas reinforce appeal of a romantic or familial vacation.

Terraces overlook the vineyards. Which means that the surrounding landscape provides a sense of seclusion that is increasingly sought after in wine tourism.

The combination of architecture, setting, and hospitality places Bellafonte within a growing category of estates that integrate wine production with high-end visitor experiences.

This is great because visitors are spending time, understanding the environment, and connecting with the lifestyle that surrounds it.

Tenuta Bellafonte supports a cohesive approach to the visitor and the wine consumer’s experience that is centered on quality, sustainability, and a modern interpretation of Montefalco’s potential.

It is a relatively young estate in a historic region, yet one that has established a clear direction.
